| Thur. Aug. 13, 9:00 am |
Boulevard B |
The Government Emergency Telecommunications Service (GETS) is a major National Communications System (NCS) program for the improvement of National Security / Emergency Preparedness (NS/EP) telecommunications. GETS supports key Government users in the event of natural or manmade disasters by providing an end-to-end switched voice telephone service using the surviving facilities of the Public Switched Network. GETS is accessible from virtually anywhere in the United States and is capable of using all major local and long distance carrier facilities plus selected Government networks, such as the Federal Telecommunications Service (FTS).
The Wireless Priority Service (WPS) was developed in response to the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and provides the cellular equivalent to GETS. WPS was first fielded in 2002 and has been employed effectively in numerous disasters since then including Hurricane Katrina.
GETS and WPS allow emergency responders to avoid “all trunks busy” conditions by using special dialing procedures on ordinary landline or cellular telephones. Use of the services is restricted to authorized personnel.
To learn more about GETS and WPS, please attend the presentation of H. Lee Jones, one of the GETS/WPS Outreach Coordinators and one of the original developers of GETS.

During this time of great transformation, it is critical to ensure that Agencies align themselves with partners whose strategies and tactics compliment their own. The Federal CIO faces several distinct challenges to include: Improving security, ensuring continuity of operations, increasing the efficiency of both human and capital assets, updating and upgrading infrastructure and sharing information across their agencies as well as all levels of Government. Trusted technology partners must be able to address all of these core needs across their portfolio. More importantly, they must possess the critical know-how and consultative approach to uncover agency specific priorities and challenges. Sprint is uniquely positioned to be that technology partner who can offer a plethora of strategies, tactics, and technologies to address the new needs of our Federal customer. During our session, we will provide specific examples of IP based wired, wireless, and converged solutions that address the needs identified above. We also plan to demonstrate how these cutting edge solutions will dramatically reduce costs.
